Church family papers
Scope and Contents
The Church family papers contain both personal and business correspondence, along with financial records, wills, newspaper clippings, and genealogical materials that span over a century. The largest part of the collection is comprised of Church family papers. Included in the collection are correspondence to and from family and friends in France. Some photographs and copies of photographs exist within the collection. A few members of the Church family are pictured. A postcard picture of the Belvidere home and a photograph of a chapel near Belvidere are included as well. Some pictures (photocopies) of Hobart College taken at the beginning of the twentieth century are also included.
A thesis by Melissa Carrie Naulin titled "All That a Genteel Family Need Require: The Church Family's Frontier Experience at Belvidere, Allegany County, New York" is also included. This thesis was written using the materials in the Church family papers and was submitted to the faculty at the University of Delaware in 2000.

Historical Note
The Church family was a well-known and prominant family in upstate New York in the nineteenth century. John B. Church and his wife Angelica [Schuyler] built Belvidere in 1804. The home was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1972.

Provenance
The Church Papers, containing correspondence, financial records, wills, genealogical materials, newspaper articles, and a scrapbook of the family were collected by Marian Cruger Coffin and Warren Hunting Smith and donated to the Archives and Special Collections of the Warren Hunting Smith Library.
